Buzz
How it turns out
A tradition, it seems, for SSE students to mingle on the atrium floors after each exam.
to bee or not to bee
I have a very complicated relationship with insects. As much as I try to love them, they give me no reason to. The closer I try to get to them, the farther they push me away. It’s almost as if there’s no reciprocation of feelings here. Unfortunately I know, in my heart, that I cannot give up on this failed relationship. They will outlive me one way or another, I might as well appreciate them before they surpass our species in survival. Whew, that got too real.
The ‘buzz’ decade in Hollywood
‘Play it, Sam. Play As Time Goes By’, ‘Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn’ and ‘Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore’ would not have had the same impact, nor would they have remained stuck in the cinephiles’ minds if they were only some lines displayed on a screen. The emergence of sound in movies changed the film industry forever and brought along with it a new age in Hollywood: The Golden Age. Spanning from the mid 1920s to the early 1960s, The Golden Age brought to the audiences many timeless masterpieces, stars who are fondly remembered today and genres that are still popular, such as horror and musicals.
One shaved head, a million meanings
One shaved head, a million meanings
The closest I’ve ever been to a buzz cut was in middle school when I had short hair with shaved sides. My previous hairstyle was shoulder length, which made the cut so much more dramatic. I never felt very attached to my hair, but cutting it off made me realize others were, to my hair and particularly to their own. I had girls asking me why on earth I would do that to my beautiful long hair. Beautiful and long being interchangeable in this scenario. One guy even asked me if this meant I was trans, mind that we were like thirteen. To say the least I was confused, all that attention and questions just because of a haircut.
What’s that buzzing sound?
At the time of writing, my device statistics say I hear buzzing on average 181 times per day. That’s approximately 11 notifications per waking hour or 2 notifications every 10 minutes of my day. To some of you this might be on the lower end, but to me it’s suffocating, claustrophobic even. Humanity has never been this available before, people (even ones you’ve never met) can contact you in a million and one ways and they will reach you. What’s more – they expect an instant response.
A Moving Image
“Perhaps one never seems so much at one’s ease as when one has to play a part.”
- Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray
From Rags to Riches
We have certainly all heard about fast fashion and its scandals. How unethical their processes are, from the very beginning of the manufacturing of clothes to the discarding of millions of tons of clothes in landfills every single day. Mass consumerism started growing in the 70s/80s, and from there, once deregulation policies started to kick in, practically every fashion company turned to outsourcing.
Having a Buzz On
Being Swedish comes with a lot of traditions and manners; not thinking too much about oneself, standing on the right side of the escalator (definitely needs some reinforcement), watching Donald Duck on christmas eve, and happily waving to other Swedes when you encounter them abroad to name a few. Another very important part of Swedish culture is the holy essence, the one and only socially and legally acceptable substance to make you have a buzz on, alcohol.
